Description

Fairy tale artwork takes an unsettling turn in The Only Friend, where a pale, doll-like girl in a powder-blue dress holds a black cat close against her chest.

The cat’s luminous green eyes stare directly ahead. At their feet lies a dead mouse, a small trace of blood staining the checkerboard floor.

Did the cat kill it?

Behind them, an antique lavender sofa and pale pink curtains suggest a room from a forgotten fairy tale. There is even a window, although beyond its glass stands a wall.

A window that looks onto nothing.

The girl holds the cat tenderly. He may be her only friend.

But what sort of friend is he?

And what sort of world are they living in?

Perhaps the room is exactly as it appears.

Perhaps nothing here is quite real.

Neither the girl nor her companion offers an explanation.

Fairy Tale Artwork — Behind the Window

Part of The Unquiet Home, The Only Friend inhabits a world where familiar interiors conceal peculiar contradictions.

The softness of the girl’s dress, the faded elegance of the furnishings, and the affectionate embrace suggest an almost innocent domestic scene. Yet the dead mouse and the impossible window quietly undermine that impression.

Drawing on the dreamlike traditions of pop surrealism art and the unsettling beauty of illustrated fairy tales, the composition invites the viewer into a story that refuses to behave as expected.

The artwork recalls the haunting imaginative worlds explored in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s exhibition on Kay Nielsen, where fantasy and melancholy coexist.

As a collectible fairy tale print, The Only Friend brings together dark whimsical art, surreal illustration, and the peculiar intimacy of contemporary figurative artwork.

The cat might be a faithful companion. He might be something else entirely.

The window promises a view, but offers only a wall.

Even the apparent safety of the room becomes uncertain.

Perhaps the most unsettling question isn’t what happened to the mouse.

It’s whether anything in this little world can be trusted.

A Note from Ellie

When I created The Only Friend, I found myself wondering what is real and what isn’t. Is the little girl trapped in a world she cannot escape? Is she so desperately lonely that she no longer questions the nature of her only friendship? And when it comes to human relationships, is it really true that beggars can’t be choosers?
